Reflections and Goals

PE 2: Reflection
ああええと
My original goals were to combine all aspects of pronunciation while being conscious of grammar. Of course, this is hard to accomplish in two weeks, but I feel like I have developed strategies on how to tackle this goal. First, I realized how beneficial hearing sentence and phrases being spoken out loud through recordings and shadowing. Also, I will try to memorize the pitch more through recordings rather than just looking at the pitch pattern visually. I was also able to learn vocabulary at a faster rate by listening to recordings. I feel like I am able to learn faster through audio rather than visuals. I've also been able to attach particles to the nouns to sound more like a native... however, I just need to be able to figure out which particle to attach!

As for the goals:

  1. I was really busy during midterm so I wasn't able to go to Japanese Tables that week. However, I was able to go to Japanese tables after my meetings (even if it was just for 15 minutes so that was helpful.
  2. I wasn't able to attend Office Hours once a week!
  3. I had great opportunities to speak Japanese with my friends.
  4. I was able to shadow. It was extremely helpful.

Now for PE 3:

Goals:
  1. To continue to combine all aspects of pronunciation (pitch, intonation, speed) as well as grammar. However, this time, I want to really try to emphasize fluidity.
  2. To be more conscious of the the different usages of each particle. I feel like it is getting harder to keep track.
  3. To not only learn vocabulary at a faster rate, but also the pitch patterns.
Activities:
  1. Go to Japanese Table at least once every two weeks.
  2. Go to Office Hours once a week.
  3. Speak with Japanese friends at least once a week.
  4. Shadow once every two days for 10 minutes.
  5. Listen to recordings of vocabulary and dialogue.

Reflections and Goals

PE 1 Reflection: (This is me reflecting vvv)

My original goals were very reflective of what I wanted to achieve by the end of the semester, so obviously, I did not complete all of them. However, I made lots of improvements. After just one month of learning Japanese, I am able to fully introduce myself, have basic conversation, and talk about my daily activities. I can fluently introduce myself although thinking about verbs + actions + particles slows down my speaking. Also, now I am a lot more conscious about the different factors that affect speaking such as intonation, pitch, fluidness, etc.  Therefore, I think achieved my goal of speaking more coherently, but only in terms of introductions. Also, through shadowing, I was able to practice immitating correct rhythms. My vocabulary is definitely expanded and I can now fluently read ひらがな.

  1. I was able to listen to recordings and repeat without looking at the ひらがな.
  2. By now, ひらがな is second nature and I do not need to look back at the chart.
  3. Shadowing 10 minutes a day is a lot, so I think to be realistic, I should try to do 10 minutes every other day.
  4. I couldn't go to Japanese language table, but I went to office hours every week!
  5. I talked to my Japanese friends a little bit, but after I learn more, I will be able to sustain longer conversations.

Now for PE2:

Goals:
  • To combine all aspects of pronunciation (pitch, intonations, speed, etc.) while being conscious of grammar
  • To make particles more attached to the noun so that it is more fluid and sounds more like a native
  • To learn vocabulary at a faster rate

Activities:

  • Go to Japanese Table when I don't have meetings (once every two weeks)?
  • Go to Office Hours once a week when I don't go to Japanese Table and practice pronunciation as well as free speaking, using new vocabulary that we have learned
  • Continue speaking with my Japanese friends
  • Shadow once every two days for at least 10 minutes a day.
  • Listen to recordings as I learn the vocabulary.

Day 4: Studying for First Quiz

Day 3: Trying to Memorize all the Hiragana

こんばんは!はじめまして。ワンです。どうぞよろしく!

日本語 is really hard, especially since I'm also taking 5th year Chinese at the same time. A lot of people told me that it shouldn't be that confusing since 1) Chinese can help me learn Japanese and 2) 5th year must mean I know Chinese so that means it shouldn't be that hard!

BUT... everybody is wrong!

First of all, I'm getting a little bit confused BECAUSE I know Chinese. When I see 三, I want to say 三 with a Chinese accent. When I see せ、か、い, I want to write 世,功,以. Also, before I went to だいがく、I didn't even speak a word of Chinese, I only spoke Shanghainese. After two years of intensive Chinese learning and spending a summer in Beijing, I am proud to say I can fluently listen and understand Mandarin Chinese, but not fluently read, write, and speak. 所以,我的中文也不太好,结果五年级的中文课也很难!

But I love all the せんせい so far. しばたせんせい is my friend's mother!

Also, I'm so excited to take Japanese because I wanted to do ever since I was 13 years old. I went through a phase where I tried to learn by myself and even went as far as to take one semester at a community college. The class was only once a week and I barely remember anything. I only remember learning  ひらがな but we never even learned かんじ or カタカナ. But at one point in my life, I knew ひらがな! I'm just also excited to take Japanese because I've been interested in its culture. I am an East Asian Studies major, focusing on comparative politics and I think it's fascinating especially nowadays when the tension in East Asian countries are rising.

Well, I'm off to study!

Also one thing I am nervous about is learning かんじ, because when I see the characters, the Chinese pronunciation will always pop up in my head first!

じゃあ、また!
